5 themes, 82 chapters, 3,575 exercises

covering 5th Grade official curriculum in Math

Fractions and decimals are fundamental in 5th Grade. It is for this reason they are addressed in depth in the first two main themes of iTooch 5th Grade Math. In this entertaining app, students also widen their understanding of whole numbers, learn about problem solving, study geometry, graphs, and other math essentials.

Here, students can review multi-digit multiplication, long division and study equations with the help of easy-to-understand diagrams. Next, decimals and their operations help students follow up on the fundamentals of place value that were addressed in Math Grade 4 curriculum. That is the true means of preventing common misconceptions or students resorting to rote memorization of the decimal operations.

Measuring and estimating are addressed in the third theme with both theoretical and real-life problem solving exercises, ranging from area estimation and calculation to time and weight to units and measurement.

Theme 4 is dedicated to graphs and simple statistics, average and mode. Today’s world has become increasingly complex and data-heavy, therefore this app provides real-life graphs to introduce students to analyzing key data concepts. Here students also gain further practice with the coordinate grid, this time with all four quadrants and have fun moving figures and plotting simple functions.

The last theme, Geometry, focuses on calculating areas of common shapes, the surface areas of some solids, and the volume of a rectangular prism. The theme also covers classifying quadrilaterals and triangles, similar figures in a coordinate grid, nets of solids, and includes plenty of visuals to aid understanding.

5th Grade Math co-author, Maria M. is a math teacher turned housewife, homeschooler and author of nine math learning books from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Maria has a master’s degree in mathematics with the teacher educational studies, and minors in physics and statistics; she loves teaching math (and teaching in general). Her experience ranges from university to vocational school, classroom teaching and private tutoring. After working with various homeschooled children, Maria noticed the struggles those moms had in teaching math. The materials they were using didn’t foster understanding nor did they provide enough practice of essential math concepts. This experience prompted her to start writing books especially for homeschoolers. The aim of Maria’s content is first and foremost to explain math in very simple terms, yet rigorously, concentrating on the understanding of concepts. Visual exercises are key as they can help children understand how math works. The content of 5th Grade Math is adapted from Maria’s books to get the best experience mobile devices and tablets can offer.

5th Grade Math co-author, Jody Smith is a 5th Grade teacher. She has a Master of Science in Elementary Education. Jody is a passionate school teacher with more than 12 years of experience. Before contributing to the iTooch project for eduPad, she has led and/or participated in numerous educational projects and mastered several innovative methods such as the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System and Smart Board technologies. Jody has worked with 3rd Grade children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and learning, physical and emotional disabilities.
